Retreatment is the repeated root canal treatment performed in
cases where a tooth that has previously undergone root canal
treatment develops a new infection, abscess, or pain. Previous
unsuccessful or inadequate treatment can lead to new problems.
In such cases, retreatment is used to preserve the tooth's
natural structure.
Retreatment is also preferred when root canal fillings are
faulty or inadequate in the teeth that will become bridge
abutments. At Dentaktif, this procedure is performed with
precision using advanced imaging systems and modern endodontic
equipment.
Root canal filling not reaching the root apex (short
filling)
Flooding of the channel filling
Inadequate cleaning of the root canal
Perforation occurring during treatment
Formation of steps, fractures or blockages in root canals
Persistence of bacteria in the root canal system
Previous treatment was performed with the wrong material or
technique
How is the Retreatment Procedure Implemented?
The retreatment process is similar to traditional root canal
treatment:
The old root canal filling is removed.
The duct system is reshaped and cleaned with special tools.
Special solutions are used to remove bacteria and infection
residues.
A temporary filling may be applied to support the healing
process.
Once the infection is completely gone, the root canals are
refilled with permanent filling materials.
If necessary, a protective restoration such as a crown is
applied to the upper part of the tooth.
While this process can be completed in a single session in some
cases, it may take several sessions in the case of persistent
infections.
Will Retreatment Be Successful?
The success rate of retreatment procedures performed by expert
endodontists at Dentaktif is quite high. However, in some
advanced cases, this alone may not be sufficient. In such cases,
surgical procedures such as root apex resection may be added to
the treatment.
What Should Be Considered After Retreatment?
You may experience some sensitivity for the first few days
after treatment; this is temporary.
Oral hygiene should be taken into consideration and the
doctor's recommendations should be followed.
Foods that carry the risk of infection and hard foods should
be avoided.
Regular check-up appointments should not be missed.
